When I was a child dairy-free Easter Eggs just weren’t available. One memorable year, my brilliant mum made me an Easter Egg using the classic ’70s coconut pyramid recipe. For the first time in years I wasn’t the odd one out without an Easter Egg. Since then multiple dairy-free chocolate brands have appeared and there are even supermarket own brand options available. The recent popularity of plant based eating has increased availability again. Dairy-free chocolate is typically quite dark and rich, while the packaging of dairy-free Easter Eggs isn’t especially appealing for children. So we’ve been around the local shops looking for readily available allergy friendly Easter Eggs and set our kids the task of reviewing them. They didn’t take much persuading!
MooFree Caramel Mini Eggs - 88g
- Eight dark chocolate eggs filled with gooey caramel
- Dairy and gluten-free
- Great taste and texture. Although the chocolate was dark, it was also quite sweet. Our adult testers would have preferred a richer chocolate flavour, but the younger testers loved them.
- Cute packaging appealed to our testers
- Not individually wrapped, so not great for Easter Egg hunts

NOMO Popcorn Egg & Bar - 153g
- Milk-chocolate style salted popcorn flavoured egg with corn pieces and matching bar
- Dairy, soya, gluten and nut free
- Great texture and taste. Really does taste like salted popcorn.
- Good sized egg that fills the packaging well.
- Good thick eggs with egg-cellent crack.
- Definitely the office favourite, also popular with our teenage testers
- £7.50 from Sainsburys (£4.61 per 100g)
Choccy Egg & Moofreesas- 135g
- Milk chocolate style egg with biscuit pieces and packet of chocolate covered biscuit balls
- Dairy, soya and gluten free.
- Really good crack at room temperature
- Good chocolatey flavour and texture. Very similar to last year’s office favourite (Nomo Cookie Dough).
- Colourful, fun packing appealed to our younger testers but does have a plastic liner.
- Slightly disappointing size. The picture on the packaging in the actual size.
- £7.50 from Tesco (£5.55 per 100g)
Nomo Monsters egg & Lolly - 92g
- Milk chocolate style hollow egg and foil covered lolly
- Dairy, egg, gluten, peanut and tree nut free.
- Tasty milk chocolate eggs with crispy rice pieces for egg-xtra crunch.
- Three different box designs, so ideal for siblings.
- Box has activities printed on the inside (including terrible jokes)
- Good thick egg which took some effort to crack.
- £3.35 from Aldi (£3.64 per 100g), £4.50 from Sainsbury’s (£4.89 per 100g)
MooFree Bing Egg & Bar - 80g
- Milk chocolate style hollow egg.
- Dairy, soya and gluten free. Ingredients don’t include nuts
- Features popular BBC Bing and Flop – the only character allergy friendly egg that we’ve come across
- Great milk chocolate taste with creamy texture.
- Good satisfying crack when you open the egg
- Liner is made from recycled plastic.
- £5.00 from Sainsbury’s (£6.50 per 100g) – the most expensive in this year’s reviews.
Sainsbury's Honeycomb Choc Egg - 85g
- Milk chocolate style hollow egg with embedded honeycomb pieces.
- Dairy, soya and gluten free. Ingredients don’t include nuts
- Somewhat uninspired packaging, that didn’t appeal to our younger testers, especially compared to the MooFree Monster eggs.
- Quite a thin egg but good sized honeycomb chunks.
- Good chocolately taste.
- £3.75 from Sainsbury’s (£4.41 per 100g)
Sainsbury's Rocky Road Egg - 250g
- Extra thick, milk chocolate style hollow egg with embedded rice biscuit balls and marshmallows.
- Dairy, soya and gluten free. Ingredients don’t include nuts
- Grown up packaging, that didn’t appeal to our younger testers.
- Genuinely thick egg with biscuit and marshmallow pieces buried in the chocolate.
- This year’s clear favourite with our adult testers
- £8.00 from Sainsbury’s (£3.20 100g). Expensives at first glance but actually one of the best value for money.
Nomo Honeycomb bunny - 120g
- Milk chocolate style hollow bunny with embedded honeycomb pieces.
- Dairy, egg, soya, gluten free and nut free.
- Cute packaging went down well with our teenage testers.
- Relatively small box, but pleasingly weighty.
- Great texture with sweet, caramel flavour. The honeycomb pieces add crunch rather than flavour.
- £5.75 from Sainsbury’s (£4.60 per 100g)
It’s useful to know that most supermarket own brand eggs are produced in the same factory. As you would expect, they all have pretty similar flavours, but do vary wildly in price. We haven’t been able to find any own brand FreeFrom Easter Eggs in the discount supermarkets this year but Asda, Tescos and Sainsburys have their usual range.

Another independent brand that produces dairy-free Easter Eggs is Butterm!lk, but as we couldn’t find any to test in our local supermarket we couldn’t include them in this year’s testing.
